Gardens Speak

Sound-pieces from Syrian gardens

Many ordinary gardens across Syria have become the final resting place for dead activists. This form of burial allows the survivors to avoid further contact with the State, while preventing the regime from erasing these deaths and thus consigning the memory of the deceased to the oblivion of anonymity. Tania El Khoury has created a reduced yet thought-provoking sound installation in which every visitor encounters the personal story of one deceased person; each carefully reconstructed with help from family members and friends. In groups of 10, audience members listen to these words from beyond the grave. It is an act of remembrance and mourning, a moment of solace and humanity.
