Eric Philippoz

(Ayent)

LEAVE THE ICE AXE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MOUNTAIN FACE

A solo for two on how life plays

A young man. A very old lady. He returns to his native village in Valais to renovate an inherited house. She goes through her belongings, preparing to move to a nursing home. Despite their age gap, these temporary neighbours share a common feeling of being torn between here and there, of misplacedness. Eric Philippoz’ first stage project is essentially based on the recordings of eight of their rosehip tea-fuelled conversations. Carefully rendering the words of the ninety-year-old, the young artist’s subtle performance touches on memory and forgetfulness, books, life choices and death, mountain hikes and jokes, returns and departures.
